Program Agenda
Grass Roots Cyber Security R&D Town Hall Meeting 2
Anyone who would like to participate, and has not received an invitation to register with the ORNL Visitor Services must register.

Our goals for this meeting are to identify areas for basic research, analyze R&D strategies, and establish the framework for innovative communication and coordination pathways so that DOE can be in a position to lead transformational efforts in cyber security. We have invited a small number of keynote speakers to help us enumerate the pressing issues/strategies and charaterize the environment from their vantage points. Specific outcomes from this meeting are expected to include:

  • Crisp, but in-depth descriptions of the key scientific grand-challenges that, when met, will provide DOE with an opportunity to transform cyber security in areas related to its mission.
  • Long-term strategies suitable for DOE research that attack the aforementioned scientific grand challenges.
  • An understanding by the community of the FY2009 budget request for ASCR and opportunities for basic research to initiate transformational efforts in cyber security.
  • Through Birds of Feather "breakout" sessions, Town Hall participants proposed and vetted innovative ideas, strategies and approaches that could migrate into or influence scientific grand challenges of interest to DOE ASCR.
  • Consider the planning horizon and activities needed to establish and expand a truly transformational CyberSecurity research program within DOE.
  • Classified sessions, intended to provide a “membrane” between open science and sensitive science.

10:30–12:00

Breakout Session: Establishing Our Vision: Identifying Specific Transformation Goals

In these breakout sessions, we will get specific about the transformations we want to support in a Science-Based CyberSecurity Research Agenda. What is it we would like to "be different" in ten years, if we are wildly successful? How will this tie with the constant changes in technology? We will use the outcome of this discussion to drive the remaining breakout sessions.

12:00–1:00

Working Lunch

Breakout follow-on discussions will proceed using the same process/guidlines as described above in the working breakfast.

1:00–1:45

Invited Speaker Michael Strayer, DOE Associate Director, Advanced Scientific Computing Research

1:45–1:50

5 minute transition break

1:50–4:30 Breakout Session: Translating Vision Into Reality: Specifying a Research Agenda

Given our transformational ideas from the morning, what specific research activities should be supported in a visionary science-based R&D agenda will be needed to bring these visions to fruition? What should our science goals be in 3, 5, and 10 years? How can we ensure that our science truly raises the bar, and does not focus on near term issues only? Individual breakout sessions will be organized around Birds of a Feather, such as Analytics/Complex Systems, Risk/Resilience, Quantitative CyberSecurity, and Data Management. We are specifically emphasizing a science approach, while acknowledging that policy and social changes may be needed to enable use of these trends.
